Here is the FAMOUS Kickstarter button that you all have been looking for. :)
My name is Dave McRae and when I was 16 or 17 years old a few of my friends and I talked about a GREAT and EPIC ADVENTURE. We wanted to walk across America. Well, bad decisions and life derailed that plan for me. I am now 55 years old and I AM GOING TO DO IT!!!!
My plan is to start on Sept. 1, 2014 at the Newport Beach Pier in California, near where I grew up and retrace my life in reverse. I will visit each of my childhood homes, my brothers and sisters, my parents, my children and grandchildren and the hospital in which I was born, located at Womack Army Hospital, Fort Bragg, North Carolina. I will finish my walk at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Along the way I will meet new friends and visit old ones.
I will be carrying two GoPro cameras, one mounted on my chest looking towards where I am walking and one mounted on a mast directed at my face. I will be making a documentary and writing a book of my journey.
I will also be conducting what I call, "Direct Charity". Since I am going to depend on the goodness of my new and old friends as well as doing odd jobs along the way like sweeping floors, washing windows and digging ditches for my basic needs, I have chosen to live on only $30.00 per day that will give me $5.00 to $15.00 to eat each day and pay for one or two nights aweek in budget motels where I can shower, charge the electronic devices being used to document "Walking To My Friends" and stay in contact with family, friends, and Backers of "Walking To My Friends" . I will "redistribute" all the excess over $30.00 per day to the folks I meet along the way who are in more need than myself.
I also have an idea for a book that I have wanted to produce for many years. I would like to photograph newborn infants being held by their parents and surrounded by their family. The twist is that I want the family to be COMPLETELY dressed in "their" regalia, whether it's a multi-generational "Ivy League" family, Native American family, East LA "Gang" family, Orthodox Jewish family or a proud Military family. My premise is that we are all born naked and shaped into the adults we become by our family.
This epic journey will take at least two years. I hope that you will not only reach into your pockets but, also follow me at www.walkingtomyfriends.org and if I am in your neck of the woods, perhaps you can let me use a few square feet of your yard or living room floor to sleep one night. Thanks for reading this and for backing my EPIC ADVENTURE and my documentary. Here is a map of America with my path.
For those that say your are Worried about me, here's at least a weather update of where I am going to be sleeping. :)

My MOST RECENT BLOG ENTRY I AM GRATEFUL! Posted on July 25, 2014 by Walking To My Friends Today I would like to share more of the way “Walking To My Friends” came into being. I have always looked at the world a little differently than most. I look at all humans as my brothers and sisters. I believe that living in peace and harmony is not only a possibility, it is “the goal” and Commandment of every major Spiritual Belief System (Religion). I believe that fear leads to anger and pain and suffering. The fear of not having our needs met, the fear of being hurt, the fear of someone having more than us, the fear of being lonely and not being loved, the fear of…. the list can go on as long as you want it to. I believe that we have the power within each of us to END FEAR in pretty short order and live in peace with all of those that share this little place in the universe we have named Earth. I believe that there are bad people who are filled with the most fear of all. These people have lost their ability to see others as brothers and sisters. They are able to cause GREAT pain through violence and greed as a way to cope with the overwhelming fear within their souls. They “market” fear to the rest of us and many, MANY of us have bought the product, FEAR.
“Walking To My Friends” is my project to show that the “product of fear” is grossly over valued and unnecessary to continue buying. The product we should all be buying” is Love, Trust and Peaceful cohabitation with our fellow Brothers and Sisters. As we reject Fear and accept Love, Peace and Trust then those who “sell” us Fear will switch the product. That is when they will learn that their own fear is unneeded.
As I am “Walking To My Friends” I hope to inspire those that follow me on Facebook, Twitter, and WordPress, as well as those who see the Documentary or read the companion book, “Walking To My Friends: Discovering Goodness and Kindness in America” to overcome their own fears of those they do not understand or yet accept in their own neighborhoods, communities, towns and cities and walk up to them and say, “I would like to get to know you better and become your friend.” This is the way to creating a peaceful world. I hope that the dream I started will become yours as well.
Whether you have already made a pledge or are planning to make one soon and become a Backer of “Walking To My Friends:Discovering Goodness and Kindness in America” on KICKSTARTER I would ask that you do the same thing I plan on doing on my walk. Give to someone every chance you have who has less than you and needs your help. Don’t judge them. Your gift to them is for you far more than it is for them.
Here are some of the people and influences that have brought me to the point of “Walking To My Friends”. I am grateful for each and everyone of them.
I have a pretty large family. I am grateful for the love they have always shown me. We do not live our lives in the same ways or in the same groups and social circles and I have often pushed their tolerances to their limits. But, I have never doubted that they love me and I hope everyday that they NEVER question my love for them. I am grateful for the Codes of Ethics and Behaviors I learned from this group. I learned the value of being honest, of hard work, of respect for those that I don’t understand or know, to accept those I see as different, to believe in LOVE and PEACE and to DREAM BIG. I am a pacifist, artist, dreamer and believe in lifting up the whole community by not being selfish with “my stuff” from my family. We often differ on how to accomplish world peace and social harmony but, WE ALL HAVE THE SAME GOAL. I look forward to spending a billion years with these people and showing them that I AM RIGHT about how to make the world a little bit of heaven now. LOL
I can never fully express my gratitude for my children. We have always walked together and yet separately. I will always love them more than myself and I have made many MANY mistakes as we have grown together but, loving each other has never been a question. They are the reason I am undertaking “Walking To My Friends”. It is a gift to them and is dedicated to leaving them and my grandchildren a better world than they were born into. Aubrey, Geoff and Joel, I LOVE YOU! Thank-you for being my kids.
Once upon a time, I traveled around the country following a band by the name of “The Grateful Dead”. This picture is one of my favorite photos of me during that period of my life. I learned so many things about my life and my belief systems by being on the road and meeting those kindred spirits with whom I shared space, food, water, beer, drum rhythms, dancing, and music. I learned that the “whole community” worked really well when everyone was willing to think of the other members at least as much as they thought of themselves. Sharing never meant “having less” it meant having more. I remember one VERY special woman. Her name was Adelle and she would wake up every-morning and make a BIG “AA pot of coffee” (you know the big silver coffee maker that serves 20-30 cups of coffee they use at AA meetings) and next to it was a basket and sign that said, “Free Coffee and whatever is in the basket this evening is Dinner for all that it will feed”. She never asked for money and fed a bunch of hungry hippies everyday. It was beautiful. I will forever be grateful for the lessons of creating and living in a self-sustaining and loving community which I learned by spending time in the parking lots and on “Shakedown Street” on tour with The Grateful Dead.
I am grateful for my friends. I am lucky and have many people who have shown me love and support over the years. This picture is of a SPECIAL GROUP of friends that I have recently made. We met in pain and sadness and darkness. In the short time we have known each other we have moved into a place of happiness and hope and light. It was during the period of time that I spent with these wonderful and supportive friends that I have drawn on ALL the creativity and strength that has been buried inside me and kept in check by fear in order to DREAM BIG AGAIN and plan this project of “Walking To My Friends”. I will be forever grateful for these new members of my family and their love and support of me.
I am soooooo lucky that at age 55, I still have the good health and strong body and (this is debatable), sound mind that I will need to walk across America.
At this time I would like to express my gratitude to all those who have Pledged your support at Kickstarter, you have helped me to believe that “Walking To My Friends” is a good idea and that the concept has value. Thank-you.
